First 10K & Camping with the Family

My first 10K (6.2 miles) was a good experience. I was able to complete the entire race without walking and that was my goal. However at times especially up the hills, it felt as the walkers could have passed me! I paced myself and drank water at almost every aid stattion. It was pretty warm that morning (80's) so I made sure I stayed well hydrated. I had been suffering from side aches lately and the few days before the race I made sure I drank plenty of Nuun. I have been trying to "dial into" this whole nutrition thing so I am trying really hard to focus on what I eat leading up to a race. I had whole wheat spaghetti, salad and bread the night before along with more Nuun with dinner. I also didn't drink (alcohol) which should be a no-brainer but oooooh so tough when we are camping! (Camping in our trailer and a nice glass of red wine often go hand-in-hand)! The next morning I had my usual oatmeal with Chia seeds along with Nuun and a banana. Just prior to the race I drank a little bit of water and had a Mocha Clif Shot gel. I intended to have another one on the course but never got around to it. I really didnt feel like I needed one but maybe it could have helped me? Who knows. I averaged about an 11.5 mile. Not fast at all but hey I finished and I'll take it!

The rest of the weekend we spent with our friends who also camped with us. It got up to 90 in the afternoon so it was tough to be outside and this campground didn't have a whole lot of shade. Thank god we have a/c in the trailer and we did get a chance to swim in a nearby creek to cool off. We love the campground Dead Horse State Park but wont be going back until we see some cooler temps.
