I get a lot of questions from people who want to start running and want to know what shoes they should purchase. While I am no expert I thought I would share what I have learned over the years.
It may take awhile to find the perfect shoe so be patient. Try more than one pair if you can. I also recommend a place like Road Runner Sports who has a return policy on shoes. Yes an actual return policy on running shoes is brilliant. In addition go to a specialty running store where they can evaluate your running and give you tips on what the right shoe is to buy. I got lucky with my first pair of Nikes that they recommended to me years ago. I have just continued to buy the same brand over and over year after year. And yes I buy a lot of running shoes. I replace my shoes about every 6 to 8 months. Or when I start to get blisters on the sides of my feet.
But I admit I get shoe envy every time I show up at a race and see all these cool looking shoes. This week while in San Diego I went and bought a new pair and didn't listen to what my voice in my head was telling me "stick with the same brand Amanda...If it ain't broke don't fix it."
Instead I got caught up in the super sweet shiny purple and pink Asics that were staring at me. And looked oh so cute on my feet. They were much better than the ugly grey "old man-looking" Nikes that were on the wall next to them. But yet those were the same Nikes that I had been wearing for years and have done me well. I snatched up the Asics and couldn't wait to go test those babies out.
I laced them up and went down to San Diego Bay. I dreamed of running faster and longer and all the while looking like a TOTAL PRO too.
Two minutes into my run my foot felt different. I just kept running. Five minutes into my run my foot went numb. I just kept running. Ten minutes into my run I had really bad pain on the ball of my foot at the base of the toes. I stopped. I could no longer feel my toes and my foot hurt bad. After a long walk back and some expletive words mouthed, I boxed them right back up and took them back to the store.
I came home with the Nikes. And while they certainly don't look that cool, they are comfortable and that is way more important than foot pain.
What I have learned is that the Asics I picked were a minimalist shoe which meant it doesn't have much support on the bottom. And not knocking Asics at all, they just didn't work for me. I have really sensitive feet especially on the bottom. I don't even like to walk around barefoot, they are that sensitive. Seeing folks run barefoot or with those glove shoes just makes me cringe! However when I run with these Nikes I feel like I am running on pillows. Sounds corny but I need all the cushioning I can get.
So I dedicate this post to my "old man" looking Nike shoes. While they don't have a rainbow of colors on them, they do just what they are supposed to do-keep me comfortable and injury free!

Nice post. I like the orange in yours! xoxo
ReplyDeleteI love your Nikes - they might not be as flashy as some, but I think the orange and grey is really fun (and I don't get the grandpa vibe...if they had Velcro closure, then yeah, lol)
ReplyDeleteThey do look beautiful to me. Congrats on being feature on SITS!
ReplyDeleteThey have grown on me! I can dig the orange now.
DeleteShoes are so important! I've gotten so I don't care about what they look like--it's what they feel like. And the barefoot shoes? I don't know if they were meant to be used on pavement. That looks like a lot of wear and tear on your body.
ReplyDeleteYes, right? I just don't get the barefoot shoes. Ouchie!
DeleteMy husband wears those minimalist toe shoes and I'm not sure how he does it. Just looks uncomfortable to me. There's nothing wrong with a good ol' pair of Nikes. :) Happy SITS Day!
ReplyDeleteYour hubby must be tough as nails to wear those. Wow. Thanks for stopping by.
DeleteI think the Nikes are cute--love the orange. I'm a walker, not a runner, but I know for me the shoes are even important for walking. Enjoy your SITS day!
ReplyDeleteYes you must have comfortable shoes for walking too. Thanks for stopping in.
DeleteUgh, my feet go numb all the time with new sneakers, so I have learned to stick to Saucony. They are not cool, but at least I can feel my feet. Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteThose are nice Nikes though :) They have a nice added punch of color. I have Asics but they're supportive, I don't trust the glove shoes yet.. Happy SITS Day Amanda! -Iva
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain! I get pain in the ball of my foot too and need extra cushioning there. Nike does well for me for a bit, but not long enough. I feel like I buy running shoes all the time. Thanks for sharing your shoe journey!
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time finding good shoes too. Not that I run, but I do chase kids and do a lot of other walking. My biggest problem is tiny feet. Kids' shoes don't seem to come with much support and women's shoes are usually too big.
ReplyDeleteAw, I think your Nikes are cool! I've also experienced "shoe envy"--I've been very tempted by the cute hot pink and lime green sneakers but realized they just wouldn't offer the same support as my grey or navy sneaks. So, basic boring sneakers it is. But hey, my feet feel great!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day btw!!!!!!
Awww - Your post made me laugh. I'm a Nike girl too and a few years ago I did the exact same thing - tried to switch brands during marathon training. Same exact thing happened, bottom of one foot hurt and the other foot went numb. I just bought a new pair of Nikes on Saturday. I couldn't be picky about the color because they were 40% off, so now I'm rockin' some gray, purple, and neon green kicks. Being a Disney fan, I'm calling them my Haunted Mansion running shoes. Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteMaybe the Asics were meant for people like me who would never run for more than 10 minutes consecutively :o) Good post!
ReplyDeleteI am no runner but I know a good pair of shoes when I feel them! I can totally relate to trying to venture outside the norm and paying for it later. I have a pair of New Balance sneakers that I have had literally since my Junior year in High school. I may not run/workout often but when I do they are my GoTo picks! They have never failed me :) Happy belated SITSDay...
ReplyDeleteYep, shoes can make or break an athlete! When I 1st started playing tennis, I played in running shoes. I like a flashy, colorful shoe & running shoes always bring it. People kept telling me that I was eventually going to twist an ankle due to lack of ankle support. I ignored people for about a year & then 1 day, I nearly twisted my ankle! If you've ever shopped for tennis court shoes, you know they are white, white, & more boring white! Ending up finding loud, colorful tennis court shoes online via Asics! Love them!!
ReplyDeleteMy Saucony's that fit like a dream, worked with my needs, happened to be bright & flashy, too. I love them. But fit is more important than flash, so if I have to buy less flashy ones when it's time for the next pair, so be it. Although a girl can hope, right?!?! Happy belated SITS day from a fellow blogger & runner!
