What do I pack in my tri bag?

This weekend I am racing my first triathlon of 2014. I am doing the Esprit de She triathlon. Esprit de She is known to put on a good post race party complete with massages, healthy food to munch on and champagne! I am excited to getaway with my girlfriends, race and celebrate.

Since this is a destination race for me, I must have all my gear packed up and ready to go ahead of time. Here is a list of items I pack in my tri bag:

The easiest way to start packing is by breaking down each event and what you need. I start it all off with my awesome Ogio bag. This thing is big and it holds everything. My favorite feature is the armored pocket on the side to hold gadgets and sunglasses. It's a hard shelled pocket built into the bag so no need to worry about your items getting crushed.

  1. SWIM wetsuit, Coeur tri kit, 2 pairs of goggles, swim cap (in case race doesn't provide), jacket for before the race.
  2. BIKE  bike shoes, socks, helmet, sunglasses, bike bottles filled
  3. RUN   running shoes, visor, race bib belt, gels or blocks
  4. MISC:  sunscreen, hair ties, towel, an extra set of contacts (I'd be blind if I lost one).
There you have it. And it all fits nicely in this bag.

What do you pack in your tri bag?

  2. So this is your Olympic distance race. I am jealous. I'm doing Naperville again. Only sprint distance, and no GoVino wine glasses at the end. You'll have fun.
Here's a trick to try (won't take much pre-race practice either). Using a small strip of Electrical tape to attach your Gu Gel to the cross bar of your bike. Tape just the tip you rip off (and start the tear just a little). That way, you can easily use one hand to rip it off during your ride and tuck the garbage in your pocket (or under the leg of your shorts).
What did the Doc. say about your knee?
    Good Luck!

    1. Hi! Yes it is my Oly, I think. I'm still undecided about the distance. The doc said it's ok to race but I'd need to really take it easy on the run. He recommends some PT after the race and laying off the running for about a month. I'll be taking some Aleve before the race on Sunday and hope that it won't bother me.

    2. And that is a great tip about where to put the GU packet. Thanks!

  4. Yes, always 2 goggles. Good idea on the extra contacts! I've never had trouble, but on my last long run I actually flipped one while rubbing sweat out of my eyes and I had a moment of panic!
