My new shoe

Do you like it? It is very sexy huh? I am thinking of buying one for the right foot since they look so great on me.

Here we are on a great camping trip with the In Laws, Brian and Maddy (Otto & Lily) enjoying this wonderful sunshine. Got to use my new (borrowed) road bike on a 13 mile ride in the desert. Loved the campfire and smores we had at night.

Thursday morning we were all getting ready for a hike. I hadn't yet put my hiking boots on (probably would have saved me if I did). But I was carrying D down the steps of the RV (there is only 3) and lost my balance and missed the last step. D started to launch backwards out of my arms. To avoid dropping him. I slammed the side of my foot down first and also twisted my pinky toe in the wrong direction. It started swelling really bad and the pain seemed to get worse. We figured it was best to go to the hospital. We called the hospital here in Borrego but they only do Xrays on certain days of the week. Nice, huh? Our only choice was to then drive 2 hours to the next closest ER.

Turns out I have a pretty decent sized break in one of the bones on the side of my left foot. My pinky toe was dislocated and the tendons holding it tore as well. Do you know what they do to re-set a dislocated toe? They just shove it back in as hard as they can. Of course I have stubborn feet so the 3 times they tried it wouldn't budge. They ended up having to numb my foot to try harder. Guess how they numb it? 4 shots right in the area at the base of your toe. Good times.

I ended up seeing and Orthopaedic specialist yesterday as well. I was relieved that I will not need surgery (was warned by ER that I may). He also said this will heal on it's own but the bummer is that I will be in pain for awhile. I am on crutches for now. Of course my first question was "can I still do my triathlon in 7 weeks?" His answer was "well only if you just do the swim part." He said I shouldn't even attempt to run or bike for at least a couple months maybe longer. So I am pretty bummed....well, not pretty bummed, I am VERY VERY VERY bummed. I am MAD at myself for being such a klutz on those stairs. I know it could have been much worse but to not be able to workout for several months is really killing me.

My only saving grace right now is swimming. I can swim all I want and it actually feels ok to swim. I just kick with one leg. So for the next couple months you'll probably see me at the Community Pool on a regular basis. Swimming was probably going to be the weakest part of this Tri but now when I do another it could possibly be my best. And yes I will be signing up for another one this year, maybe a mid-Summer one and a Fall one.

Also to add: Dylan is ok. He didn't fall out of my arms. But I did go down I just held on to him as we both went down.

  1. How scary! That really stinks but I'm glad to hear D is okay.
