Ty received 2 fish as a reward for reading ten Step1 Reader books all by himself. We went and purchased the tank, rocks, heater etc for the fish. We carefully let the water sit for 3 days before we put the fish in. Then picked out 2 guppies "Lemon" and "Orange." Later after the kids went to bed Paul checked the tank and just 5 hours later the fish were belly up. Turns out the tank heater would not shut off after a certain temp so basically we boiled the fish. Of course my first comment was "maybe the boys won't notice?" Hahaha right. The first thing out of T's mouth in the morning was "let's check my fish." Even D woke up saying "fish." Lovely. We did explain what happened. There were tears in T's eyes but he took it ok.
Yesterday in the car he asked me if fish have a Heaven...
And here comes the "life and death" talk. Is there a manual I can follow for stuff like this?
I did a similar thing with a crayfish Cannon brought home in the 3rd grade.
ReplyDeleteTake it from me, stick with small animals that they can't pet. The larger ones are harder to explain.
